New Zealand Odyssey: Two Railway Houses at Otira, Westland

'New Zealand Odyssey', published in 1989 by Heinemann, was authored by me, Don Donovan (who did the text and illustrations) and Euan Sarginson, who did the photography and design. In this series of blog posts, I will publish some of my drawings.

The early New Zealand Railways organization had a good sense of style and a highly developed socialistic paternalism. These were standard NZR house designs that can still be seen in many places in the country, wherever the railways had significant operations and families of staff. This pair is absolutely typical and were at Otira, high up in the Southern Alps on the connecting line between Westland and Canterbury.

In 1989 they were clearly in good repair and full use; I don't know whether they still exist but I hope so because they are kiwi classics.
