New Zealand's Westland: Lake Moeraki

Lake Moeraki was hidden from common view until the 1960s when the highway connexion between the West Coast and Central Otago via the Haast Pass was finally completed. The uncommon view was previously for explorers followed by gold prospectors and miners (who would go anywhere in search of riches) and, later, trappers and trampers.

Now the highway runs along the western side of the lake revealing its deep. silent, almost sinister waters surrounded by rain forests dripping with mosses and lichens. It is home to water fowl and trout of impressive proportions.
