Country Churches of NZ 144. St. Michael's, Waimea West, Tasman

-->
I wrote and illustrated Country Churches of New Zealand. It was published in 2002 by New Holland, Publishers and is still on sale in bookshops. The publishers have kindly agreed to me re-publishing some of the book’s images and descriptions in this blog.
ST. MICHAEL'S, WAIMEA WEST
A sociable rooster (who attracts a few comments in the visitors' book) met us at the gate and accompanied us to the church door of Thomas Brunner's St Michael's, Waimea West.
This church's architect had risen to great heights in my estimation (having already been impressed by his St Cuthbert's at Collingwood – see 141) but this is small church architecture on a grand scale, especially when first seen at a distance in early light.
Built in 1867 on an acre given by lay reader Captain Blundell (to whom it is a memorial), it replaced a nearby 1843 predecessor which was said to be the earliest church in the South Island.
